Artist Statement

For me, art is the exploration of Identity. I am always asking questions and documenting through paint what it means to be human. It is a continual deconstruction of the beliefs and ideas we are taught from birth to adulthood; the traumas we endure, the triumphs we rise to, and the honesty required to face all one's nature. Each work is its own narrative grappling with a specific expression of one's personal journey.

As a synesthete who experiences emotion as color, all works whether representational or abstract rank color over form.

I paint alla-prima using dry brushes, knives, materials and the body to blend, scrape, distress and imprint messages and experiences on canvas.

If you put one of my art pieces next to another, you will discover the similarities to be only the vibrant colors and the immediacy of each piece. A strange inertia, if you will, that resists every provocation until the piece is complete. I like to think of each painting as a photograph of all the experiences we can’t see. A moment, memory, or feeling that lives on canvas.

“...He/she is on some personal journey to the underworld to bring something back, build a new body out of other body parts, and things that didn’t exist until this instant. In this way, art is something like an undoing of death, looking for a lightning spark or an eternal spirit”
